UK banks received 10,092 complaints from 9,803 people about restrictions on crypto payments over roughly 90 days from May to August 2026. The figure comes from Stand With Crypto UK, an advocacy group, through its online complaint tool. It is not FOI data or an FCA statistic, and the complaints are self-selected, so they do not show actual rejection rates.
Lloyds Banking Group had the most complaints at 2,297, including Halifax and Bank of Scotland. Barclays followed with 1,569 and NatWest Group with 1,278, together about 51% of the total. HSBC UK had more than 1,000.
Several banks publish limits. Barclays and HSBC UK cap payments at £2,500 per transaction and £10,000 over 30 days, NatWest at £1,000 per day and £5,000 over 30 days, and Santander UK at £1,000 per transaction and £3,000 per month. Starling, Chase UK, TSB, Metro Bank, Virgin Money and the Co-operative Bank were reported to prohibit crypto payments. Barclays says its restrictions protect customers from scams, while Coinbase’s Katie Harries criticized limits on transfers to FCA-registered firms.
The timing matters. HM Treasury wants Britain to be a leading destination for digital asset businesses, the new crypto regime is scheduled for October 2027, and the FCA’s application window runs from September 30, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Stand With Crypto has asked the FCA and HM Treasury to clarify when industry-wide restrictions can be justified under fraud rules. The article reports no response from either.
