Ethereum delays Glamsterdam on Hoodi testnet over security risks

Ethereum Delays the Glamsterdam Hoodi Testnet Fork After Auditors Flag Gas-Repricing Risks to Existing Contracts

Ethereum developers have postponed the Glamsterdam hard fork on the Hoodi testnet. The fork was due on Monday, the day after the October 22 announcement, and no new date has been set. The delay followed findings by the auditor ChainSecurity about security impacts on existing smart contracts.

At the center is EIP-8037, one of two proposals, with EIP-8038, that change how Ethereum charges for creating and accessing stored data. Glamsterdam also adds a separate gas pool for creating new state. ChainSecurity warned that changed gas rules can break assumptions contracts rely on when external calls fail. An attacker could supply too little gas so that a valid operation fails and the failure is recorded permanently, a tactic known as insufficient gas griefing. In ChainSecurity’s words, “a failure path that previously reverted can now complete,” even with unchanged code. It has found 13 real-world examples.

Node operators have been told to revert to an older release without the upgrade scheduled, or wait for a client release that cancels it. Prysm said a release removing the upgrade would follow the same day. ChainSecurity is contacting affected projects through responsible disclosure, the Ethereum Foundation is assessing how many contracts are exposed, and projects should check their own contracts.

Hoodi is a testnet, so no mainnet funds were at risk. The delay does show that large gas changes can have side effects on live code, which is why they are tested first.
