Bitcoin Core has changed its security policy for vulnerabilities that can be easily rediscovered, for example with a simple prompt to a large language model. For these bugs, the project will backport fixes to every maintained major version, release point versions as soon as possible, and publish an advisory with some details alongside the fix.
The old rules favored long secrecy. Low-severity flaws were published two weeks after the next major version shipped, and medium- and high-severity issues stayed embargoed until two weeks after the last affected release reached end of life, which could take up to a year. Other vulnerabilities keep the severity-based schedule, and critical bugs are handled case by case.
Antoine Poinsot, a Chaincode Labs developer, wrote the proposal and announced it on the Bitcoin Development Mailing List. He attributed the change largely to a rise in reports of easily rediscovered vulnerabilities, which he linked to LLMs lowering the effort needed to find certain classes of issues. The change was merged on Thursday.
The logic is that a long embargo protects little if anyone with an AI tool can find the same flaw. Publishing sooner shortens the time attackers can use a bug that is still unpatched. Separately, a Bitcoin Red Team effort across 390 repositories reported 4,962 findings, which shows how fast AI-assisted bug hunting is scaling.
Users running Bitcoin Core should expect faster point releases for this class of issue. No active exploit has been reported in connection with the change.
