Households in the Netherlands held about €3.2 billion in crypto through domestic service providers at the end of June, according to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), as reported by NL Times. That is roughly 1.4% of their investments in bonds, shares and investment funds. Bitcoin accounted for €1.5 billion and Ethereum for €300 million, while stablecoins made up less than 1%. Businesses and other sectors held another €200 million, for €3.4 billion in total. The figures exclude crypto held with foreign providers, in personal wallets or through indirect investments.
In the 2026 Quote 500, Arnhem-born Jean-Louis van der Velde, who was involved in founding Tether in 2014, is the richest Dutch person with an estimated €26 billion, nearly twice the wealth of number two Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken, WNL reported. He was missing from earlier lists because it was unclear whether he still held Dutch nationality, and it has since been confirmed that he has a Dutch passport. The 500 richest Dutch people together hold about €300 billion, and the number of billionaires rose from 52 to 56.
On the security side, Amsterdam-based bitcoin company Bitonic was hacked. Attackers stole bitcoin from three customer accounts, an amount the company called small. The breach was found on Sunday evening after hackers exploited a vulnerability to access part of its systems and change login credentials on multiple accounts. Bitonic took the affected systems offline, fixed the flaw, restored them and reimbursed all three customers in full. It cannot rule out that other customers’ personal data was accessed, although that does not appear to be the case so far, and it will notify the relevant regulators. Customers were urged to change their passwords.
On Bitvavo, the token IRYS rose 2,588% this week, according to Crypto Insiders, from about €0.01 to an intraday high of about €0.28 before falling back toward €0.025. It became the sixth most traded crypto on Bitvavo with about 5% of total trade, behind only BTC, XRP, ADA, ETH and SOL. Crypto Insiders found no major announcement behind the rise, saw trading volume grow mainly on South Korea’s Upbit, and cited CoinGlass data showing nearly $58 million in short positions liquidated in 24 hours. It warns the token is extremely volatile and notes that it receives a fee for promoting Bitvavo. This is news, not investment advice.
