FATF Plans a Targeted Review of Crypto Hubs With Initial Findings Due in June 2027

The Financial Action Task Force has launched a targeted review of jurisdictions with significant crypto activity, aimed at gaps in how governments apply global anti-money laundering standards, Cointelegraph reported. The FATF plenary that agreed the step concluded on October 30, 2026, and the plenary wording refers to a targeted review and accelerated follow-up processes for virtual assets.

The focus is on jurisdictions with materially important virtual asset service provider activity, with their existing assessment status taken into account. Regular assessments and follow-up procedures remain the main evaluation tools. No jurisdictions have been named and the number under review has not been disclosed. Cointelegraph said it contacted FATF for details but had not received a response by publication.

On timing, Cointelegraph reports initial findings in June 2027 and further results in October 2027, followed by monitoring and faster reporting to track progress on deficiencies.

The review follows a July FATF report that found 83% of surveyed jurisdictions had adopted Travel Rule legislation for crypto. However, 55 of the 91 jurisdictions with such laws had not yet taken supervisory or enforcement action. Authorities also struggled to identify unlicensed crypto businesses and to oversee overseas providers serving local customers. The Travel Rule requires service providers to share sender and recipient information for transfers.

Which countries are covered will become clearer once FATF publishes details.
