Solana Foundation Urges Ubuntu Validator Operators to Mitigate Critical Linux Flaw CVE-2026-98432 Before a Patch Arrives

The Solana Foundation has warned validator operators running Ubuntu about a critical Linux vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-98432. Tim Garcia, who handles validator contacts at the foundation, said on X on November 2 that the flaw “is patched in the linux kernel but not yet patched on ubuntu.” The weakness is in the Linux operating system, not in Solana’s software.

According to Crypto Insiders, an attacker could send specially crafted network packets to crash a vulnerable server remotely, without a password or prior access. Under specific conditions the attacker could also run commands. The problem arises when a server handles multiple internet connections at once, and precisely timed packets can make it reuse memory it has already released. Ubuntu rates the flaw 9.8 out of 10 and lists versions 22.04, 24.04, 26.04 and 26.10 as vulnerable.

As of Monday evening no fix for the standard Ubuntu packages was listed. Until one appears, operators are advised to block certain incoming packets and disable two network functions, which the article does not name. After the kernel update is installed, servers must be rebooted for it to take effect.

The report says no attack on the Solana network or its validators has been observed, and Amazon Web Services reports no known exploitation. Crypto Insiders adds that SOL holders and wallet users need not take any action.
