BlackRock filed a preliminary prospectus with the SEC on Monday, October 19, for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT). The fund would not hold Bitcoin directly. It would use options linked to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), run as three overlapping sets of contracts that are typically replaced one per month. Each set would initially target a maximum loss of about 10% before fees, while capping gains. BlackRock warns the fund has no fixed protection start value, floor or cap, so investors could face larger losses.
Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart said PBIT would be BlackRock’s third Bitcoin ETF filing, and that similar buffered Bitcoin funds already exist from Calamos, First Trust and Innovator. IBIT remains the largest spot Bitcoin ETF, with $65.7 billion in net assets. ETF Store president Nate Geraci noted that BlackRock still sits out spot ETFs for Solana, XRP and HYPE, adding that it “clearly has high conviction in only sticking [with] BTC [and] ETH.”
The direct price effect looks limited. The filing is preliminary, with no approval or launch date, and PBIT would not buy Bitcoin itself. Its main signal is that the world’s largest asset manager sees demand for risk-managed Bitcoin exposure, which fits the continued institutional interest in the asset.
