Four security stories from the past 48 hours show how attacks reach users from different angles.
On October 30 and 31, attackers hijacked the DNS records of 12 DeFi sites registered at Name.com and served a wallet-drainer kit that Blockaid linked to Step Drainer, according to Bitquery. The legitimate addresses were affected, so users who typed the correct URL still landed on attacker-run copies. Bitquery counts $202,386 taken from 32 wallets across six chains, and says the true total is higher because Solana and Aptos losses are excluded. How the records were changed is unconfirmed; Kintsu said the problem occurred on Vercel’s side. Bitquery advises revoking token approvals signed on those two days and using bookmarks instead of links.
Chainalysis confirmed a breach of internal systems in which customer names, email addresses and job roles were viewed. A preliminary review found no evidence that case files, passwords or active sessions were reached. The company says the incident is unrelated to the Binance attack but warns that the exposed data makes targeted phishing easier.
CoinDesk described a physical route. Former crypto executive Magnus Ahmad lost about $14,000, roughly $9,500 in crypto and nearly $3,000 in card charges, after a stranger took his unlocked iPhone outside a Hackney bar on August 8. Two men had earlier watched him enter his passcode, and his wallets and accounts were drained within roughly an hour.
Crypto Insiders added a customer-protection angle using the Bitonic case, where an attacker withdrew bitcoin from three customer accounts and the company compensated them. Crypto is not covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee, and under MiCA a custodian is liable only when the loss is attributable to it. Compensation depends on the cause of the loss.
