The FBI says it is working on the response to the $6.3 billion Binance hack. It told Nextgov it is aware of the incident and engaged with relevant public and private partners to understand the scope, evaluate the impact and coordinate investigative steps. Reuters, citing a source, reports that the US Secret Service is also working with Binance.

Federal involvement matters for the chase. Stolen crypto can be split across thousands of wallets and several blockchains within hours, and agencies can combine information from multiple countries and warn crypto firms which addresses to block. That makes it harder to move the funds on, but it does not guarantee that Binance gets anything back.
Attribution remains open. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs linked the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a group associated with North Korea. That is a forensic assessment, and the FBI has not attributed the Binance hack to North Korea. After the $1.5 billion Bybit theft in February 2025, the FBI did name North Korea, but only later.
TRM estimated that $6.36 billion left Binance wallets, most of it within about 20 minutes. Binance says a preliminary investigation points to a compromised laptop of an engineer, and it has pledged to cover all losses. A final technical report is still missing.
