Stacks Co-Founder Says Quantum Fears Already Cap Bitcoin’s Growth and Points to 2028 as a Key Deadline

Muneeb Ali, co-founder of the Bitcoin layer-2 network Stacks, said quantum computing fears already limit bitcoin’s growth. “There is already a ceiling on the growth of Bitcoin because of quantum fears,” he told Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction podcast. He argued that risk-averse institutions may hold off on large purchases until developers present a credible path to quantum-resistant security.

On timing, Ali warned that bitcoin could face a riskier period if meaningful progress is not made by 2028, because upgrades take years to deploy and users then need time to move funds to new addresses. He cited NIST guidance pointing to 2030 for the transition to quantum-resistant security, and said advances in AI could speed up quantum computer development and pull that date forward to 2029.

He acknowledged that some bitcoin supporters consider the threat distant or overstated, but said this disagreement could itself erode investor confidence without a clear roadmap. A powerful quantum computer, he said, would more likely come from a major research lab than an unknown attacker. “If Bitcoin gets hit, everyone gets hit downstream as well,” he said.

StarkWare reported in September a 79% reduction in the estimated computing cost of preparing an experimental quantum-resistant bitcoin transaction. The approach needs no change to consensus rules, was shown only in benchmark tests, and StarkWare still advocates a protocol-level upgrade as the long-term fix. This is news, not investment advice.
