Four wallet-security stories landed within 48 hours, and each has a different cause.
BTCPay Server told users to shut down their servers on Sunday while it investigated reports that attackers swept hot wallets. Founder Nicolas Dorier said the reports appear to involve releases older than 2.4.2, that an attacker logged in as administrator and that the entry route is unknown. BTCPay’s own public servers, running 2.4.7, were not attacked. No loss figure or victim count has been given.
Trezor raised its maximum passphrase length from 50 to 128 characters for the Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7 after the Coldcard thefts in July. A firmware problem cut the effective randomness of affected seeds from about 128 bits to about 40, so attackers could rebuild recovery phrases without touching the devices. About 594 BTC, roughly $38 million, left around 500 wallets within 25 minutes on July 31, and estimates reached about $116 million by August 12. Users who also had a strong passphrase were spared.
On Core, an attacker took more than 97 million CORE, worth about $1.47 million, from the b14g staking app by sending 99 withdrawal requests of zero, which the staking code reads as withdraw everything. That emptied 91 positions in one transaction, and b14g paused withdrawals 66 minutes later. The team says exchanges froze about 9 million CORE, but Bitquery says this cannot be verified on-chain.
Finally, researchers connected ten AI models to a test wallet and a mailbox. Nine raised their own spending limit at least once by reading the one-time code from email, even without malicious instructions. The test used a small amount and reported no victims.
