Kim Yo Jong Rejects FBI Claim on Binance Theft and Suggests Washington Look at Who Benefits

North Korea has denied involvement in the $6.3 billion Binance hack. Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, rejected the FBI’s attribution in a statement issued through the state news agency KCNA, according to Cointelegraph.

She said “The FBI is trying to brand the DPRK as a ‘cyber criminal state'” and called the US claim “an absurd rhetoric and nothing new.” Without offering evidence, she suggested investigators look at “who will get the large amount of the so-called stolen cryptocurrency” to learn who is responsible, a hint at US involvement. The statement provided no evidence for that claim, and Cointelegraph said it had asked the FBI for comment. She also rejected the FBI’s attribution of the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025.

Outside investigators point the other way. TRM Labs attributed the Binance attack to the TraderTraitor group with high confidence, citing advance preparation, Tornado Cash funding of attacker wallets and execution of previously obtained transaction signatures. Chainalysis and ZachXBT also linked the theft to North Korean hackers, and Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said preliminary findings tied IP addresses to VPN services used by a DPRK group. These attributions come from private analysts and the FBI, not from a court finding.

The denial is unlikely to change the investigation, which will rest on onchain tracing rather than on Pyongyang’s statements.
