Brent Crude Falls More Than 9% as the Midterm Result Fuels Hopes for an End to the Iran War

Brent crude fell more than 9% on Wednesday as the Democratic midterm win raised hopes of a path to peace with Iran. Cheaper oil could ease inflation worries.

Brent crude fell 9.2% on Wednesday afternoon, to a level Crypto Insiders put at about 84 euros a barrel, the lowest in nearly a month. CoinDesk’s live coverage put the move at nearly 9%, to about $95. Oil had already dropped more than 4% on Monday on cautious optimism about US-Iran talks, when Brent was still above 96 euros.

The sharper fall followed the US midterm elections, which gave Democrats majorities in both the House and the Senate. Vice President JD Vance is reported as blaming part of the Republican defeat on the Iran war, and President Donald Trump acknowledged the war played a role. According to the Associated Press, as cited by Crypto Insiders, the Democrats take control of Congress on January 3, while Trump remains president and decides military policy.

There is still no peace agreement, and the Strait of Hormuz is the main risk. New military news could push prices back up quickly. For markets, cheaper oil could lower transport and energy costs and ease inflation, reducing the need for rate rises. Crypto Insiders noted that lower market interest rates and a weaker dollar also contributed to the move.

That chain of effects helps explain why risk assets rallied alongside the drop in oil: the 10-year Treasury yield slipped below 4.9%, US stocks surged, and bitcoin recovered above $80,000.
