Binance and Polymarket have proposed a Polygon hard fork to recover about 70.49 million POL, roughly $6.8 million, stolen in separate incidents, Cointelegraph reported. The governance proposal, published on Wednesday, covers 23.86 million POL (about $2.31 million) across four addresses tied to the Polymarket hack and 46.63 million POL (about $4.51 million) in one address tied to the Binance hack.
The fork would remove the tokens from the five attacker-controlled addresses and move them at a predetermined block to recovery wallets designated by Polymarket and Binance. It would not change POL’s total supply. Block producers have already blocked transactions from those addresses, but the proposal describes that as a temporary measure that cannot return the funds.
The plan still needs governance approval and testing on the Amoy testnet before any mainnet change. Discussion was scheduled for November 5, and no mainnet date has been confirmed. Cointelegraph’s article contained no direct quotes.
The proposal follows a rough week for both companies. Binance disclosed a record $6.3 billion hack on October 29, and Polymarket suspended trading after a third-party provider was compromised. A rollback-style recovery on a major chain is rare and controversial, because it reopens the debate about immutability and who gets to decide when state changes are justified.
