Solana Alpenglow Activation Begins September 28 With 150 ms Finality Target

Solana is set to begin activating its Alpenglow consensus upgrade on September 28, 2026, according to the Agave v4.3 release schedule. The change is not an instant switch: activation starts on that date and rolls through subsequent epoch boundaries into October.

Alpenglow replaces Tower BFT voting with Votor, a two-stage consensus mechanism that targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds. The design also raises the network’s fault tolerance, allowing up to 40 percent of stake to drop out, compared with 33 percent before. On-chain voting costs are removed and replaced by validator admission tickets of about 0.8 SOL per epoch.

The rollout has followed a staged timeline. The mainnet-beta upgrade candidate was marked on September 4, with volunteers requested to run 10 percent of stake on v4.3 from September 8 and 25 percent from September 14. Validators are being advised to upgrade generally from September 21. Early in September, only a small fraction of active stake was reported to be running v4.3 builds, so validator adoption remains the key variable to watch.

For traders, the upgrade is a structural improvement to Solana’s core rather than a one-off price trigger. Faster finality could benefit payments, trading applications and on-chain markets, but the market impact will depend on how smoothly the activation proceeds. Any delay in validator uptake or an unexpected issue during the epoch transitions would be the main risk to monitor over the coming weeks.
